Genre: Slamming Deathcore
Location: New York
My oh my, what a seriously impressive release from the lads over at ‘A Future Corrupt’ this year with the release of their brand new 6 track EP ‘Decay’, this thing has got it all. Let me continue..
AFC is one of those bands that is standing out because it is mixing so many genres into one combined super release, and it certainly stands out. The EP opens with a pretty regulation intro, that is, lots of ambient noise and movement in the dark, creepy samples and lots of looped bass, its…. fucking awesome, before it comes in with some chunky just chugging away to some drums, its pretty standard, but it does what it intents to, and that is, make sure the listener understands that it is a Deathcore EP you have blasting ladies and gentleman.
From there on, the track flows directly into ‘Feed The Worms’ which is JUST as punishing as you would expect, plenty of heavy chugs and drops, and thus a binding precedent is set for the remainder of the EP, cheeky riffs, big build ups, sternum crusher drops. The good stuff.
Now then, lets talk individual aspects of the EP, as I always do, I’ll split it into 4 categories, Vocals, Guitars, Drums, Mixing.
So, first up is vocals-
I like them, a lot, in fact I love these vocals. There is something super raw and harsh about them that just rubs me the right way, the lows are deep and violent, the highs are raspy and choked, and the mids are powerful and consistent. + Plenty of the classic “Bleaarggh!” just before a drop. You beauty.
Guitars- The tone is a little shaky to me, almost a little TOO edited to sound wacky, I mean, it does sound wacky, and It does captivate me, but its not for the harsh metal tone that you’d fine on something like early Impending Doom stuff, but it is a tone all the same. Just a touch off for me but that is all personal preference so what can I say.
The actual writing is cool, very adventurous, however some of the riffs are just a little too far gone for me, I don’t think they fit the style that the vocals are pushing the song to sound like, I feel they’d be better suited to a pop punk song almost. (Sorry) I know thats the biggest insult you can give a Deathcore band, but SOME Riffs are leaning that way.
BUT, in saying that, the chugs are brutal, the trem picking is right on song and I do like it a lot. Maybe just double check the bridges before settling on them.
Drums- Yeah sick, the drums are sick, I love the drums. Simple as that. AFC love to ride the ride as it were, and really give it an absolute pounding the whole EP through, the double kicks are spot on every time, and the snare just sounds nice. They don’t have that fake over produced sound that is getting pushed down a lot of deathcore’s up and comers throats these days. Which leads me onto my last category. Mixing.
Mix- In general, I like it, it sounds well recorded with the right equipment for the job. THERE ARE however, a few areas in almost every song where I feel like the entire structure is lacking to have gaps filled, and not in the good way. It’s like there needed to be more recorded in the studio in totality to fill some of the voids, as there are some areas where it’s just a single guitar playing over an off tempo drum beat leaving a lot to be imagined. Some good samples in the background or maybe another layer of higher scale guitars would have really done the job, BUT, it’s all trial and error at this point for the lads of AFC.
In closing though, I DO like this EP, I have had it on in my car all week just playing a track here and there on every drive, keeping me well entertained. It’s good to just sit and jam to, bop your head to the bounciness of it, grit your teeth at the drops and just think about bashing your ex missus. It’s cool, for sure. There is a solid future ahead of these guys, I think they just need to really knuckle down and work our exactly WHAT makes a song stand out in this day and age of a dime a dozen bands, what it is that will make them COMPLETELY different from the rest of the crowd. It will come to them, they just need to take their time and perfect it and I have full confidence that in time, they will.
Recommend for fans of perhaps Emmure? Maybe even Black Tongue.
