EP Year: 2014
Genre: Death/Thrash Metal
First and foremost, literally everything Cannabis Corpse does is awesome. There’s no getting around that fact. That nasally, buzz of the grow lights bass sound is just too perfect, and it really helps set their death metal tone. Add in the bowl clearing vocals and bong shattering double bass drums and you’ve got yourself a winning combination.
Their half of the Splatterhash EP takes the listener to a crusty backroom party where the bud smokes you while getting absolutely wasted in typical death metal fashion. While both of their contributions are strong, “Shatter their Bongs” is clearly the better strain of the two. I’m fairly certain I got a buzz just listening to it.
I’ll admit that I’m not overly familiar with Ghoul’s music, but it’s clear that they’re the thrashier of the two bands. While keeping true to the death metal sound, their half of the split shows off that circle pit thrash mentality while those scratchy, blunt hit vocals drive the energy home.
Their track “Inner Sanctum” has all the makings of a great death-thrash track: group vocals, guitar solos, relentless vocals, etc. Clocking in as the longest track on the EP, it features everything that’s great about heavy metal. Their second track, “Spill Your Guts” is much shorter, but showcases that balls to the wall thrash style that Ghoul is just so good at.
My only complaint about this EP is that it’s only 4 tracks long. I wish it went on forever.
