The Michigan based outfits new EP, “The Reversal” brings the pain! The opening track “Dusk” hits like 100 rounds from an AR-15, then switches it up into Dillinger-esque breakdowns with gut busting bass blasts and bowel removing vocals.
The intensity continues into the track “Admit One,” which tricks the listener into buying a ticket to the soundtrack to his or her own demise with riffs reminiscent of The Faceless. Their relentless approach to their death metal sound is perfectly accompanied by vocalist Zack Fountain’s growls and the one-two punch of guitarists Doug Blaisdell and Keith Harvey.
The insanity dies down a bit to start the next track, “To,” but is quickly reignited in the most “chug-tastic” of fashions (yea I made that word up, sue me.) Tracks like that make me regret cutting off my hair, because all they make me want to do is windmill until I’ve sustained a serious neck injury…I guess emphatic head nodding will have to suffice. “To” is by far their most diverse track, with a total tempo change about every 2 minutes, its brutality speaks volumes and is an absolute must hear for any tech-death fans….and towards the end of the track, my word, it kinda sounds like a Gojira/Faceless hybrid! Well-done gentlemen! Well done indeed!
Not to leave anyone else, kudos to bassist Sam Fraser and drummer Shane Whitehead for putting the rumble down on every track. Ethereality is a shining example of how a band can excel when each respective member brings their A+ game to the table.
A must listen for fans of The Faceless, Gojira, and general heaviness in music.
