Do you ever have that moment that you know a band is good just by their name or album artwork? You look at the name or artwork for the first time and think to yourself, “Man, this is about to kick ass.” This is what happened to me when I saw the artwork for Half A Tusk’s Daedalus Design for the first time. It instantly pulled me in and I was expecting great things from this EP. However, I did not think it would be this great.
Half A Tusk may be labeled as technical death metal, but they manage to incorporate a ton of different genres into this five song EP. There is definitely a thrash influence as well as a melodic death metal influence. You can see the thrash influence in that this EP is built on riffing and shredding. These are pure head-banging, foot-tapping, circle pit-inducing riffs with some added epic sounding solos mixed in as well. There is also a bit of progressive death metal and jazz on this EP. This is seen on “Embrace the Chaos,” and “Abandoned Theory,” with the former being nine minutes long and beginning of the latter sounding like late Death.
There are too many good things to say about this album. The song structure is great and transitions very smoothly. The production is phenomenal, everything sounds very clear. The vocalist fits in perfectly with the sound of the band. Reminds me a little bit of Randy Blythe and Mikey Powell from Conducting from the Grave. The vocalist adds to the already monstrous sound coming from the band. The lyrics, however, are nothing to write home about, just the usual end of days type of stuff.
Half A Tusk’s Daedalus Design is absolutely phenomenal. This is exactly what I want out of a technical death metal record. It is a shame I did not discover them last year as they would have certainly had a top 5 place on my best EP’s of 2013 list. This EP is name your price up on Bandcamp so you should go and throw a couple of bucks towards the band’s way. Half A Tusk, also, only has 214 likes on Facebook. That needs to change immediately. Daedalus Design is an incredible debut for Half A Tusk and I cannot wait to hear more.
