From the city of Cincinnati Ohio, we’re approached by the engulfing grasp of deathcore mob Manipulator, and their self titled three tracked EP. Like most bands who fall into the deathcore category, you can expect to hear the usual core material. Don’t let this throw you off, there’s some incredible talent pouring out of the masses of young upcoming bands that are currently sprouting about worldwide, which can be identified within these tracks. Although saying this, ‘Doctor Death’ shines as the only real gem from the three, starting with it’s eerie introduction from a crying witch taken from the well known game Left 4 Dead. You don’t have to be a fan of the game to be pulled into the track’s monstrous sound, which then spirals out of control in a wacky, almost amusing tech riff explosion. The breakdowns are brutal and unhealthy with their slow, raging pace – a perfect fit for a deathcore band.
The vocals are pummelling and vicious, yet lack the punch it demands. Mainly consisting of the low growl-like Phil Bozeman style screams, which ceases as stupidly effective over the goliath like breakdowns on the EP. It saddens me that the vocals were not as desired as perhaps I would have wanted, maybe a little variation would of improved this.
Whilst Manipulator barely bring anything unique from the short lasting EP, the music still holds as an upcoming contender amongst the vast array of underground hordes. It’d be difficult to separate the band from other bands doing the exact same thing, but I do believe there’s more to come from them, perhaps they’ll agree with me on a future release in which I wait for in anticipation.
