Genre: Progressive Deathcore
Location: Covington, Louisiana
Single Year: 2013
Deathcore with space/galactic/alien themes is becoming more and more prominent with the rise of bands like Born Of Osiris, Lord Of War and The Zenith Passage. I, personally, have always loved deathcore with these kinds of material in them, as it is a really creative variation of the standard chugging breakdown-infested deathcore on the scene today.
Meridian are a progressive deathcore band from Louisiana, founded from the roots of post-hardcore band A Modest Proposal. They are another band which use galactic sound effects, strange time signatures and themes of planetary bodies, celestial destruction, and the vast expanses of space.
Their single, ‘Triplanetary Alignment’ is a fantastic display of the aforementioned themes. It begins with a fast-paced section filled with harmonies and then develops into a part with some outstanding clean vocals backed by haunting growls. One thing that stands out on this single is the use of otherworldly, almost ghostly effects worthy of ‘Follow The Signs (BoO). These effects, mainly a xylophone-sounding instrument and some echoes, compliment the heavily distorted guitar work.
The vocals on this single are great, although I think some higher screams would have worked really well with the rest of the overall sound. The low growls provide a stark contrast to the soothing guitar melodies and eerie sound effects.
Overall, this is yet another fantastically creative demonstration of the variety deathcore can offer, and I really look forward to some more material from this band. Keep an eye out!
