Genre: Deathcore / Metalcore / Hardcore
Location: The Netherlands
“Our Metropolis,” by Reaching For Dawn, is a unique track. At first, I assumed the band was going to be more geared towards the more lighter aspect of this genre, but as the song continues, you are greeted with ridiculously powerful growls. This band fuses tight melodic riffing with brutal vocals quite seamlessly. These two elements, when mixed, often creates dynamical and textural contrast, which is always refreshing to my ears.
The song alternates between heavy passages and melodic passages. The track includes “ambient” guitar solos that fill in the gaps of their breakdowns. Outside of the few breakdowns, the band doesn’t do a ton of chugging, each component of the track has a distinct riff with melodies and harmonies. The song is also structured well. It doesn’t become monotonous in any instant and reoccurring themes make themselves obvious as riffs from near the beginning of the track are used for the outro.
The lyrics can be perceived as distributing retribution to those who have taken from you, but they can also be analyzed in a positive manner. Sticking up for what you believe in and fighting to keep what you have, both mentally and physically, are two ideas that seem to be expressed. Our Metropolis is definitely a song with meaning behind the lyrics. These days, I’m enjoying bands with lyrics that have substance over bands with lyrics that are “brutal,” so Reaching for Dawn seems to kind of hit home in this aspect as the lyrics actually have depth.
I rather enjoyed this track and will be looking out for their future releases. If you’re a fan of ridiculously low growls, groovy metal riffs and harmonies, and songs with meaning behind their lyrics, this band will probably fit right in with your metalcore / deathcore collection.
