Album Year: 2010
Genre: Deathcore/Death Metal
Widow The Sea’s 2010 release ‘Novella Of The Ocean’ was never something I failed to encounter despite my heavy involvment with the underground metal scene. Unfortunately for me, I definitely missed out on this great six-tracked monstrous EP. Bands in this era are now constantly cooking up the entire modern crisp-clear production consistently throughout the world, but it seems back in 2010 this specific taste was at it’s peak, exploding with exciting bands. Whereas now shit loads of sub-genres have been self created by bands, it’s this original deathcore sound that truly separates this EP from the masses out there today.
‘The Nameless City’ easily ceases as Widow’s best efforts on this EP, and no wonder they made an official video for this track. It’s easily influenced by the likes of The Black Dahlia Murder, escaping the deathcore genre and entering a whirlwind of technical, encouraged death metal, as if TBDM had just slept with Skeletonwitch and had a little baby. However, the tracks that come after ‘The Nameless City’ creep back into their deathcore roots, nearly resembling Bring Me The Horizon’s, or even Bleed From Within’s early stages in terms of variation, this is especially noticeable within the vocals. Don’t fool yourself into thinking those bands mentioned make this a crap release because this is very much not the case. Instead, I welcome those similarities and have come to the conclusion that I am really fucking gutted I missed out on this EP when it first popped out of the vagina of the musical world.
Taking brief peaks at Widow The Sea’s current position, it looks to say their genre is evolving into a mature, melodic sound. In which I have no problem in hearing, infact I’m glad the band are still together unlike the majority of bands which have a lifespan of 1-2 years, that always pop up and dissolve, as if nothing had ever happened. Having missed this golden gem, I look forward to anything Widow plan on throwing at their fans in the future.
For fans of The Black Dahlia Murder, Skeletonwith, (Early) Bring Me The Horizon, (Early) Bleed From Within.
